A full conversion from US-spec 540 to MTech — front and rear MTech bumpers, M5-spec power folding mirrors, Shadowline high-gloss window trim, body-color door mouldings, and the cooling ducts the MTech front bumper requires. None of it came on a US-spec car.
The 2000 BMW 540i Sport was a well-equipped car by any measure. But BMW's US allocation left a few things behind. The MTech package — available in Europe and other markets — brought a more aggressive front and rear bumper, the M5's power-folding mirrors, and a distinctive high-gloss trim package that changed the entire look of the car's exterior details.
Before 2001, the E39 540 Sport came with matte/satin window surround trim. The M5 always got high-gloss black — what BMW called Shadowline. After the 2001 model year, the 540 Sport in the US finally got Shadowline trim and body-color door mouldings too. For a 2000 car, getting to that spec meant sourcing the later parts and fitting them. The difference is immediately visible — the gloss trim tightens up the entire side profile of the car.
The MTech mirrors are the same units fitted to the E39 M5 — larger, power folding, with a different housing profile than the standard 540 mirrors. They're a direct fit on the 540 with the correct wiring, and they change the shoulder line of the car completely. These are documented extensively in the mirror section of this photo record.
The MTech front bumper has a different lower valance, revised fog light placement, and requires its own cooling duct arrangement for the alternator — those are the metal ducts you'll see in the photos. The rear bumper is similarly more aggressive in its lower section. Neither was offered on a US-spec 540 at any point. Fitting them required sourcing the correct parts from European suppliers, fabricating the duct brackets, and making sure the fog light wiring translated correctly.
The MTech/M5 mirrors are power folding, larger, and use a different housing profile. Direct fit on the 540 with correct wiring. Same units as the E39 M5.
MTech front bumper with revised lower valance and fog light placement. MTech rear bumper with more aggressive lower section. Neither was offered on US-spec 540s.
Pre-2001 E39 540 Sport had matte window surround trim. Post-2001 got Shadowline high-gloss black — same as the M5. Body-color door mouldings came at the same time. This is the conversion to that spec on a 2000 car.
The MTech front bumper changes the airflow path to the alternator. These metal ducts replace the stock plastic arrangement and are required to maintain proper cooling with the MTech bumper fitted.
M5-spec interior liner panels — the same units fitted to the M5. A direct replacement for the standard 540 liner.
The car with bumpers removed, windows out, and trim stripped — the point of no return where the full scope of the conversion becomes real. Every part documented against the parts list before it went back on the car.
