I never owned one. I can honestly say I have only regretted not buying an M5 every time I think about it. The world's fastest sport sedan when introduced. I want one so badly you might be able to talk me out of my 2000 540.
The E60 M5 arrived in 2005 with a naturally aspirated 5.0L V10 producing 507 horsepower — the same basic architecture as the M6 and derived from BMW's Formula 1 program. It was, at the time, the most powerful naturally aspirated production sedan engine ever built. The sound alone is worth the price of admission.
"I can only regret the 540 when I think about the M5."
The tachometer redlines at 8,250 RPM. The V10 pulls all the way to it. There is nothing quite like the sound of a high-revving V10 at full throttle — a mechanical choir that no turbocharged engine has ever replicated. These photos and videos capture a few of the details that make this car what it is.
